THECOLVILLEFAMILY
Nationalities which make the Colville Family
It was throughout William the Conqueror's reign of France, when certain members of the Colville family travelled over from Normandy, France with him, to Britain, settling in Scotland, where most of the family continue to live to this very day.The family were knights who worked for William the Conqueror -fore we were of Norman origin. As generations went by, the knights of the family worked for Henry VI.

Although the name might have been changed from deColville, to Colville, there are still a significant number of Lords, Viscounts, Nobles, and Dukes, that the Colville Family are descendants, or are still presently living.
family tree branches
Throughout the centuries following, the family branched off. Some Colvilles migrated further a-field to Canada and America. They sailed from Macrihanish, Kintyre, Scotland to settle and landed in Canada in 1835. The family set up farms along the border between Clarke and Darlington counties within 5 miles where Brian Colville currently lives (who contributed to this page).
where different family branches live. Many Colvilles in America live in Philidelphia, and many fought for Britain in the American Revolution...they were shortly afterwards extrodited, but then returned. Since then, a steady flow of Colville's have been moving to Canada along the decades...
However, the main bulk of the family still live up in Scotland in areas around Campbelltown, where Scottish coast stretches out to meet Northern Ireland...some Colvilles have moved down to England, and there are a few dotted around the place in the UK.Many have migrated Northern Ireland, fore Campbelltown(where many Colvilles settled after migrating from France) meets the coast of Ireland.
My personal 'close' family relatives live in England or Scotland. Although, we do have some who live in Canada, or have moved to America, which are distantly related.
family trades
Throughout the years, the family became involved in the whiskey and steel trade, in Scotland, where my great granfather, John Colville came from. His ancestors once founded a steel works, but then sold it on to British steel, fore it had fallen into major dis-repair and had gone into liquidation.

places linked to Colville
The name Colville is linked to 3 towns in Normandy , France. These towns are located along the River Seine, also where the Colville family originated from... Colleville-sur-Mer on the road from Port-en-Bessin to Grand Champ, Colleville-Sur-Orne, and Colleville.
These towns are located around the castle, Carleton Castle(afterwards, Newton), once in habited by Colvilles.
Also, a Native American Tribe was discovered in Northern Washington by a Sir Andrew Colville from Great Britain. The tribe was from then called 'The Colville Tribe', as was the town which grew nearby.
As well, an area in Suffolk, England called 'Carlton Colville' where family, relatives have been traced.
family fame
There are some fairly famous relatives amongst our family tree. For example 'Colville of Culross', sounds fairly important in his time, in France. For a fact, I know of a Colville who is in the House of Lords, in Parliament. Dr.James Colville studied for a while at Glasgow University in Scotland, and got high degrees.Alexander Colville, a reknown Canadian artist. Richard Colville, who is currently press secrutry to the Queen of England in the 1960s and still is...I think.Sir Andrew Colville, who discovered and renamed a tribe in N.Washington, USA. The town is now called Colville, and has a popultation of 5000.Sir Alexander, who lives in Canada, Commander Colville, former head of the Queen of England's personal contingent at Buckingham Palace.Lord Colville of Loch Ochiltree, a representative in the House of Lords, Sir John Colville, and more, who I do not know their names yet...
In addition, there are many Sirs and noble men who went by the name of Colville, in the middle ages; Sir Allister Colville,, Sir Alexander Colville, Sir Andrew Colville, Sir Robert De Colvyl (an example one of the few abreviated names from Colville) Gilbert De Colville(1066, a nobleman who travelled over with Willaim the Conqueror to England. He took lands many countys belonging to Robert Malet. Gilbert De Colville also appears in the Doomsday Book and in the Dives Roll).
